Hope in the Time of Cholera

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Romans 12:12.

Chikodi Speaks Hope*

On February 12 of 2023, the first confirmed case of cholera in Zimbabwe was recorded. By November, over 6,500 cases had been recorded, causing the deaths of 136 people. To date, cholera has spread to all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe, putting over 10 million people, including 5 million children at risk.

Because cholera is water-borne, poorer remote communities have been disproportionately affected, as the disease spreads quickly in areas with poor sanitation,  limited access to clean water, and inadequate hygiene. And one in six new cholera infections in Zimbabwe affect children under 5. Etleva Kadilli, UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa says,

"The impact on children goes beyond the direct health consequences of cholera. Learning loss is a major concern. It is imperative that the response not only be swift but also considers the long-term well-being of these young children.”i

But praise God that Chikodi, a RiverCross Champion in Zimbabwe is determined to share hope in the midst of tragic circumstances. Three days a week, Chikodi makes the 2.5 mile walk into one of the villages hardest hit by the epidemic to lead RiverCross Freedom Clubs; sharing stories of hope and transformation, leading the children in discussion, games, and activities, and teaching the children how they can increase their own safety through good hygiene.  Through Chikodi’s work, these children are safer and are experiencing hope and joy in the midst of sorrow.

*Although the stories we share are true, identifying details have been changed.
