Hope to Break Down Walls

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God."

Psalm 42:11.

In the United States, the term "mental health" has become commonplace in our schools, workplaces, and even around our dinner tables as people have begun to acknowledge the need for holistic health. In Zimbabwe, however, mental health remains a niche concept, leaving most Zimbabweans without opportunity to access mental health experts. Without guidance, many Zimbabweans facing complex mental health struggles often turn to substance abuse as a means to cope with their problems and shield themselves from discussing difficult feelings.

By hosting RiverCross Kids Clubs at schools in Zimbabwe, RiverCross Champions have been able to provide a safe space for children to overcome mental health struggles. By using interactive games to foster relationships, and the power of story to guide conversations, kids are being empowered to process their emotions and experiences while building healthy relationships with both their mentors and peers.

For many children, the fun and games is what attracts them to these clubs, but they end up gaining access to a loving and trusting community that offers them the support and guidance they have been missing. Not only do our clubs set children free from past trauma, but give them the tools for healthy coping, eliminating the desire to turn to substance abuse.
