In the heart of Africa, two boys were beginning to give up.
Tariro, 13, and Kuda, 12, had lost their spark for school. Challenges at home weighed heavily on them. Academic struggles made each day feel harder. Little by little, their confidence faded. Participation dropped. The future felt uncertain.
For many children, this is where the story can begin to unravel.
But God was already at work—placing caring leaders in the right place at the right time.
After receiving RiverCross training, Nyasha and Tawanda began leading a RiverCross Club in their community. They created a safe place where children could be seen, heard, and encouraged.
As a result, Tariro and Kuda found a safe, supportive space where they could be seen, heard, and encouraged. Leaders Nyasha and Tawanda took time to build trust with the boys, listening carefully and helping them talk through their struggles, goals, and hopes for the future.
“The leaders care about us and want us to succeed,” Tariro shared. “They listen to our problems and offer guidance without judging us.”
Through one-on-one conversations, goal-setting, and encouragement, the boys began to reconnect—not only with school, but with who God created them to be.
In RiverCross Clubs local leaders use the GLAD approach, combining games, listening to our audio drama, Bridge to Freedom, activities, and meaningful discussions to help children process trauma and adversity and get the support they need. Activities like “Human Knot” and “Bridge Builder” helped Tariro and Kuda develop skills in teamwork and problem-solvingp and growth in trust, resilience, and hope in Jesus.
“I love GLAD!” Kuda said. “We learn while having fun, and it’s helped me make new friends.”
Another key part of their journey was Bridge to Freedom, RiverCross’ audio drama that helps children explore real-life issues like bullying, identity, resilience, and making wise choices. As Tariro and Kuda listened and discussed each episode, they began connecting the stories to their own lives.
“The audio drama makes us think about our actions and choices,” Tariro said. “It helps us understand why we should make good decisions.”
At the heart of Tariro and Kuda’s story is the good news that Jesus sees children that others may overlook. The gospel reminds us that every child is made in the image of God, deeply loved by Him, and never beyond His reach.
Their transformation is not only about better behavior or improved school performance. It is about restoration—children rediscovering dignity, purpose, and belonging through the steady presence of compassionate caregivers.
As Tariro and Kuda grew in confidence, kindness, and resilience, their lives began to reflect a deeper hope: the restoring love of Christ bringing healing where there had been hurt and light where things once felt dim.
Over time, the change became visible.
Tariro, who once struggled with self-doubt, discovered a love for writing and poetry. He now participates in school competitions and dreams of sharing his stories with others.
Kuda, who had struggled with anger and relationships, began developing emotional awareness and healthier friendships. Today, he is part of the school’s peace club, helping promote harmony among his peers.
“I’ve learned to manage my emotions and be kind to others,” Kuda said. “I want to be a leader and make a positive impact.”
This is what happens when children are treasured in their communities and supported by trained, compassionate caregivers.
